When I was a kid I used to dream of buying the mall and living in it. The staircase on that Texas house tells me I am not the only who dreamed of this. Glad I grew out of it though! And why is there a loft overlooking a bedroom?!

F car rentals. I don't even use Uber/Lyft but I would lean more towards that over renting a car at the airport if public transit isn't an option. Avis at O'Hare tried to charge me double because my plane was delayed by a few hours due to mechanical issues. And at 3am! I woke myself up enough to tell the woman that I wasn't late, my plane was, and take that extra charge off now. I might have scared her but it worked. Shame on them.

Holy cow, that Utah house! Eight BRs, and you still had to double/triple up the occupancy (some with mattress on the floor)?? AND someone is living in the garage? And still can’t afford to update the 90s cabinets.

If you have a chance, visit the Botanical Gardens while you are in STL! It is one of the things I miss most about living there!

1. I highly recommend writing up a message that briefly explains your experience, how unhappy you are, and the result you would like (full refund? honouring of original price? etc), looking up the email address of the Thrifty CEO, and emailing it to them. No, of *course* it's not going to get to them, but it *is* going to get to that CEO's PA who is going to want to resolve it as quickly as possible and thus is much more likely to just do what you want than a customer support person who has metrics to hit. My therapist (of all people—she was truly awesome) recommended this to me years ago and I've since used it to get refunds from Airbnb and Uber Eats, both of which have incredibly shitty customer support.

2. I was already so grossed out by that Sister Wives house and then I hit the picture of the kitchen with the bar chairs bolted to the counter so they're nonadjustable. Just get one of those "live laugh love" word decals that says NO FATTIES already, you monsters.

I also had a terrible experience with Thrifty. Massive charges thrown on after we had already paid for the damn car with points. They also told us we’d get an upgrade and then charged us for it. Never again.

I had a somewhat similar situation with our rental car in Vermont during fall foliage season. I had certain guarantees worked into my contract because I booked through USAA, and the rental car counter kept telling me that she couldn’t see any of it, and I would be liable for any damage to the car while it was in my possession if I didn’t pay the extra fees. After arguing for a couple minutes and showing several emails, I decided to just accept the fees and work it out later.

Luckily, when I called after returning home, the customer service rep was very helpful and apologized several times for the pressure that desk agent put on me and upsold me on things I didn’t want. They gave me HALF MY FULL CHARGE back! Like, I was looking to have $100-ish refunded and they gave me at least $250 back.

Hoping for something similar for you when you return home! 🤞🤞🤞
