A few weeks ago I mentioned in a post that our fridge was “making a weird noise” which turns out to have been an early warning that the fridge was no longer feeling like “keeping things frozen in the freezer” was a part of its job that it needed to do every day. Earlier this week I was the last person up in the house (as I usually am) and in the quiet, I noticed that there were actually quite a lot of weird noises coming from the fridge. When I went to check, I discovered that my frozen bananas were nearly all the way unthawed and were actively dripping all over the other food in the freezer. I tested the temperature in the freezer and it was 32 degrees, which is about 32 degrees warmer than it should be. I moved as much still frozen food down into our basement deep freezer as I could and mentally prepared myself for the fact I’d probably end up having to throw some food away this week.
I don’t think I’ve ever bought a fridge before and, as I started looking for options online, I quickly realized something about myself: I don’t actually care that much about fridges.
This is partially because nearly all the fridges that are available in the size that will fit through the narrowish doors 1926 house look basically the same. Everything is stainless steel, so aesthetically it seemed pretty clear that our new fridge was probably going to look an awful lot like our old one. Which is … fine. Fridges are boring.
Is it weird that I sort of wish we could still get appliances in avocado green?
Beyond that, I knew that I wanted a dumb fridge with no bells and whistles. I don’t need my fridge to have a sensor that tells me when we are low on milk. I have eyeballs to tell me that. I also have 12 year old and a 15 year old who are both in growth spurts, so I just operate on the assumption that we are always pretty low on milk.
We ended up ordering a fridge online from Costco, largely because the price was right and the delivery was available this weekend. Ah that all home decisions could be made as easily.
As I started clearing out space for the fridge delivery people, I got a text (with the picture above) from my daughter, asking that we all have a moment of silence for “Billy”, our old fridge. My daughter loves to name inanimate objects in our house, which is how we also have a dishwasher named Jeremy and a vacuum cleaner named Hans. I declined her request to hold a funeral for Billy but have given her naming rights for the new fridge, so she was mollified.
So far I’m doing well at not blaming Billy’s death on my desire to quit my freelancing job so we’ll call that growth.

Some things I found interesting or enjoyable this week include:
A love story about a man, his wife, and his girlfriend that was very moving (and not a story of polyamory or infidelity)(CW: dementia)
This is one of the reasons I am an unashamed member of “team check a bag” . I also I get to check for free with my credit card, so that helps too, and I love the freedom of swanning around the airport with only a backpack.
NFL players rate their teams and “Minnesota nice” apparently applies to football teams too.
The next Pelofondo is April 20-21st and I’m signed up! I need to get a whole bunch more butt in seat time between now and then.
A song I had on repeat this week:
Yay for April PELOFUNDO!!! I did the one in January and it was fab. I’ve got a 2nd one on my goal sheet for the year but it will be July or Oct as we’re heading to Dublin (first overseas trip!) late March/early April so I’m going easy on myself with the return. Cheering for you!!
Carry on was never for me. I never saw a plane as a bus, and dammit I like a little service when I travel.
